What is it
made from?
Identify the feedstock, polymer or binder, additives and any coating. A material name alone does not establish the composition of the finished straw.
Request formulation detailsSpecific claims. Relevant evidence.
An interesting material origin is one part of the story. Product composition, food-contact suitability, disposal conditions and market access need their own review.
Request a document pack for your selected straw and destination. Report availability and scope are confirmed against the exact formulation and finished item. Standards and certification schemes below are reference requirements, not blanket certificates for the entire range.
01 / Composition
Identify the feedstock, polymer or binder, additives and any coating. A material name alone does not establish the composition of the finished straw.
Request formulation details02 / Intended use
Match food-contact documentation to the selected product and intended beverage, temperature and contact conditions.
Review product-specific documents03 / End of life
Define the environmental claim, the tested conditions and the disposal route available in the destination market.
Confirm claim and disposal scope

Beyond the ingredient story
We offer nine manufacturing material routes, including plant residues and polymer options. The selected formulation determines which claims can be supported.
For your project, request the exact supporting documents and review them with the importer. Certificates for a different product, a raw material or a different disposal setting should not be treated as interchangeable.

A destination-specific decision
Do not assume a biodegradable material is exempt from single-use plastic restrictions. Confirm the finished item’s classification with your importer before committing to a material or approving packaging claims.
For plant-fiber composites, the full formulation is especially important. Review the material and applicable food-contact authorization basis, rather than relying only on the origin of the fiber.
Your documentation request
Use this list to tell us what your sourcing team needs. The applicable route depends on the full material formulation, intended use and market.
| Market / claim | Documents to discuss | Scope to verify |
|---|---|---|
| EU / EEA food contact | Regulation (EC) 1935/2004; GMP under (EC) 2023/2006. For materials legally classified as plastic: the applicable (EU) 10/2011 composition, overall / specific migration evidence and Declaration of Compliance. | Exact formulation; relevant simulants, time / temperature and product identification. National provisions can also apply. EU food-contact legislation ↗ |
| United States food contact | Applicable FDA food-contact authorization basis, intended-use restrictions and supporting supplier documentation; a letter of guaranty where appropriate. | Match the substance, supplier and use to the applicable route. A generic “FDA certificate” does not replace this review. FDA documentation guidance ↗ |
| Commercial compostability | Finished-item evidence under a relevant scheme. BPI uses ASTM D6400 as its base standard, with other assessments for eligible items. | Verify the named product and certification scope. Raw-material evidence alone does not establish finished-straw certification. BPI scheme requirements ↗ |
| European industrial compostability | Review EN 13432-based schemes such as OK compost INDUSTRIAL; EN 14995 addresses compostability of plastics. Agree the correct standard and scheme scope with the certifier. | The complete assessment includes more than degradation alone. Match biodegradation, disintegration, ecotoxicity and regulated-element evidence to the product and scheme. TÜV AUSTRIA industrial scheme ↗ |
| Home compostability | Separate home-compostability evidence and an applicable certification scheme, if that claim is requested. | Check the exact certificate and licensed use of the mark. Industrial compostability does not establish home compostability. TÜV AUSTRIA scheme overview ↗ |
| Middle East / importer pack | Country-specific food-contact, conformity and labeling review; document requests agreed with the local importer. | Do not treat the Gulf as one approval system. Review single-use restrictions before selecting a polymer-containing straw. UAE ministry announcement ↗ |
Include restricted-substance, heavy-metal or fluorine / PFAS testing requirements if your market, certification scheme or purchasing policy calls for them. Test methods, analytes and reporting limits need to be specified; these are not universal substitute certificates.
For wrapper inks, laser marking and colored products, confirm that the relevant finished configuration is covered. Quality-system or factory-audit records serve a different purpose from food-contact and compostability evidence.
